29181Anderton LiftAnderton Lift (River Weaver)Anderton Lift (Trent and Mersey)03 January 202506 November 2026Earlier this year, the Anderton Boat Lift was closed after a lifting wire failure during planned routine maintenance by our teams. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reopen the lift using the existing gate lifting system. Trust engineers have been working closely with specialist consultants to develop a solution that will see the original rope-and-pulley mechanism replaced on all gates with a more modern, robust and safer lifting system making the lift more reliable.

We're pleased to confirm that the Trust has prioritised the funding required to support the detailed engineering design. However, this work will take time, and the lift will remain closed throughout all next year 2026. We understand how frustrating this closure will be for boaters who regularly use this vital link between the Weaver Navigation and the rest of the Trust's network. The significant investment we're making into this repair reflects how important the lift is to our waterways. Although the lift itself will stay closed, the Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre will remain open, with an exciting programme of events and activities planned for 2026. We hope you'll continue to visit and enjoy everything the site has to offer.

This essential redesign work is being delivered ahead of, and separately from, the wider refurbishment programme. We'll continue to share updates as the project progresses.

We also understand the impact that Marsh Lock's closure is having on customers wanting to visit the Weaver. Our teams are working through the options to bring the lock back into operation, and you can follow updates [here.](

Thank you for your ongoing patience and support for this vital and historic structure.

29821Grand Union Canal (Grand Junction Canal - Main Line - Gayton to Brentford)Batchworth Lock No 81Batchworth Lock No 8109 January 202620 February 2026Following the dewatering of the navigation, further essential work has been identified to ensure this repair can be completed safely and to the correct standard. As a result, the current stoppage will need to be extended.
During the inspection, a section of approximately 12 metres of the existing wall was found to be in significantly worse condition than originally anticipated. This section must be fully dismantled so that new foundations can be installed, before the wall can be rebuilt.
The navigation is now scheduled to reopen on 20 February 2026. These works will be completed by this date, and passage will be made available over the following weekend, ahead of the next planned stoppage at Lotmead Lock 80, which begins on 23 February 2026.
We apologise for any inconvenience this extension may cause and thank you for your patience while we complete this essential repair.

29735Shropshire Union Canal (Llangollen Canal - Main Line)Grindley Brook Bottom Lock No 14Whitchurch Ring Road Bridge No 31A22 December 202523 January 2027We are pleased to report that the three boats most impacted by the breach have now been recovered and refloated. Our focus will now turn to the work required to rebuild the canal and reopen it as soon as possible.

Given the size and scale of the repair to reinstate the canal, work is unfortunately expected to continue for much of 2026. We appreciate that some boaters on the stretch of canal north of the breach may wish to move their boat before the canal repairs are complete and are grateful that Whitchurch Marina is providing the option for boats to be moved before the breach is repaired.

Engineering investigations into the cause of the breach are ongoing, and we will publish a summary of our findings once complete. For further information, please see our FAQs regarding the breach below:

30043Shropshire Union Canal (Llangollen Canal - Main Line)New Marton Top Lock No 1New Marton Top Lock No 109 February 202627 February 2026We need to introduce an emergency stoppage at Lock 1, New Marton, above Welsh Frankton, on the Llangollen Canal to allow essential repair works to be carried out.
The bottom gate has developed a serious water leak, which is preventing the lock from filling correctly. Repairs are required to the lock gates and cill, along with associated brickwork restoration.
Given the impact on boats currently within the now‑isolated length of canal, we are keen to undertake these repairs now, ahead of the main boating season, to minimise longer‑term disruption.
The stoppage will be in place from 9 February until 27 February.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding while we complete these vital works.

29784Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal (Main Line: Autherley to Great Haywood)Penkridge Lock No 38Penkridge Lock No 3831 December 202530 January 2027Engineers have attended site at Penkridge Lock 38 to assess the damage. A significant section of the culvert has collapsed, which has also washed out sections of infill and foundation beneath the bridge and the nearby cottage.

To prevent any further risk to these structures, the void has been stabilised using specialist concrete. Contractors are now working to clear remaining sections of the culvert that are blocked with compacted debris.

Further investigations and surveys are ongoing to establish the original alignment of the failed culvert. Once confirmed, options to reinstate the culvert, including water jetting or directional drilling through the concrete infill, will be explored.

At this stage, a reopening date cannot be confirmed and will depend on the successful installation of a new section of culvert. Further updates will be provided once investigations and surveys have progressed.

29585Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Union Canal)Pywells Lock No 21Pywells Lock No 2112 January 202606 March 2026We'd like to clarify the nature of the upcoming works at Pywells Lock.  The project has always been intended for gate repairs rather than a full gate replacement. The schedule remains unchanged, as other essential works are also planned during this 8-week stoppage. These repairs are crucial to maintaining the lock's safe operation until the full replacement, which is scheduled for 2035.07 Dec 25 19:55:16

29958River KennetBurghfield Lock No 103Burghfield Lock No 10317 January 202629 January 2027Further to the notice below, subsequent inspections of Lock 103 Burghfield Lock have identified that the gate is severely damaged below the waterline.

As a result, the repair is not straightforward and is likely to require dewatering of the lock.

Our Engineering and Construction teams are currently assessing feasible repair options.

We will update this notice as soon as further information becomes available, including indicative timescales for the works.

You are welcome to contact us at [enquiries.walessouthwest@canalrivertrust.org.uk](mailto:enquiries.walessouthwest@canalrivertrust.org.uk) or 03030 404040 if you would like to discuss this information with a member of our Customer Service Team.

29984Lee and Stort Navigation (River Lee)Ware Lock No 2Ware Lock No 221 January 202621 January 2027Navigation through Ware Lock is currently closed. Ware Lock is an Environment Agency's (EA) asset and was closed last week to allow the Environment Agency to carry out an inspection. During this inspection, critical safety concerns were identified with the lock gates. The Environment Agency is now awaiting a report from their contractors to confirm the extent of the works required and when navigation can safely reopen.

As the lock is owned and maintained by the Environment Agency, we are reliant on them completing their assessment and any necessary repairs before the lock can be reopened. While the lock remains closed, boats will not be able to pass through Ware Lock, and customers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly. A further update will be provided by 6 February 2026.

29962Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - River Soar Navigation)Kegworth New Lock No 56Kegworth New Lock No 5602 February 202620 February 2026Kegworth New Lock 56 will be closed from 8am on 2nd February to 4pm on 20th February.

This closure is to carry out essential repairs to the bottom lock gates, improving the lock's operation following the recent replacement of the top gates ahead of the spring boating season.

Unfortunately, these works could not be completed during the original closure due to delays caused by severe weather and flooding conditions. Extending the previous stoppage at Kegworth Lock 56 would have prevented us from delivering the planned lock gate replacement at Gees Lock on the Leicester Line.
