To undertake the bridge replacement safely, a substantial crash deck will be installed across the full width of the canal beneath the bridge. This temporary structure is required to allow the removal of the existing bridge deck, repairs and preparation of the bridge abutments, and the installation of the new bridge deck.
Boat movements will be facilitated during suitable breaks in the construction programme where it is safe and practical to do so. Opportunities for passage may be available at key stages of the works, including during bridge deck removal activities when temporary works can be adjusted to allow access. Every effort will be made to minimise the duration of the closure and we will provide further updates as the detailed construction programme is finalised.
We have worked closely with Network Rail and local marinas to minimise the impact of these essential works on customers and will continue to provide updates as the programme develops. Contractor Volker Highways, working on behalf of West Berkshire Council, will be installing new sheet piling to strengthen the existing canal wall on the north side of the canal. Due to the narrow section between Bridge 60 and 32 Wharf Street, a full navigation closure will be in place for the duration of the works, and no vessels will be able to pass through this stretch. We would like to advise customers that the planned third-party works to demolish and replace Bridge 128 have been rescheduled.
Following revisions to the delivery programme, the contractor working on behalf of High Speed 2 Limited will no longer be undertaking these works on the dates previously notified.
As a result, the proposed start date for the works is now 4 January, meaning that there will be no impact from HS2 works during November and December.
The programme for these works is currently under review and further updates will be provided as soon as more information becomes available.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while these arrangements are finalised, and we will continue to work closely with HS2 and their delivery teams to minimise any impact on navigation as these works progress.

We have had to implement an immediate navigation closure at this lock due to a balance beam that is at risk of failure, making the lock unsafe to operate.
The lock will remain closed until further notice while we carry out the necessary safety measures. Once the structure has been made safe, we will look to introduce assisted passages until a permanent repair can be completed.
For your safety, please do not use the balance beams to cross the bottom lock gates.

This closure is earlier than planned due to the channel depths reducing with fewer boats navigating through and as a consequence, we are unable to guarantee the depth of the navigation channel.
Customers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid Gloucester Docks.
Please take this opportunity if you need to move through or out of the Dock ahead of this closure.
Customers seeking to remain in Victoria Basin over winter will be unable to leave via the Dock until a safe channel has been achieved through the dredging programme.
We are unable to confirm when the Dock will re-open and the timing of reopening will be dependent on the scale of the dredging campaign and available water levels. We will however, update as soon as possible.

Following further assessment and testing of the manual lock gates at Tinsley Lock Flight, we can offer a limited number of assisted passages on Thursday 24 September 2026.

Passage will be supported by our lock keeping team and will operate under additional arrangements while further assessment and testing of the lock gates continues.
Due to the operating effort required at some of the lock gates, boaters may be asked, where they are able and willing, to assist our lock keepers with gate operation during their passage.
If you are unable to assist with manual gate operation, please make this known when making your booking so that appropriate staffing arrangements can be considered for your passage.

While the bridge is out of action, we are running assisted passages every Tuesday at 11:00am and Friday at 2:00pm, with a member of our team on hand to operate the bridge manually.
In line with our Better Boating commitment, we will keep this notice updated as soon as we have a firmer timescale.

Unfortunately, the part that was originally ordered is not currently in stock within the UK. We have now sourced and will order the required part from Germany, which means it will take longer than usual to arrive.
Once the part has been received, our M&E team will attend the site and endeavour to complete the necessary repairs and restore the bridge to full operation as soon as possible.
We will provide a further update on Friday 25 September with more information on the progress of the repairs.

Following our previous update, our team is still awaiting delivery of the replacement footbridge and the scaffolding required to carry out the works. Once these have been delivered and the scaffolding erected, we will be able to confirm a date for the repair.

Please be advised of updated arrangements for Thursday 13 August only, after which the closure will resume at Napton & Marston Doles Locks 8, 14, 15 and 16. The aim of this closure is to reduce water demand and allow water levels to recover during the current dry spell. To accommodate craft travelling through Lock 17, we will temporarily open the flight on Thursday 13 August: * Lock 16 will be open from 08:00 until 11:00 for boats entering the flight. * Boats entering at Lock 16 will be permitted to continue through and exit at Lock 8 by 13:00. * All craft must be clear of the affected section prior to the reintroduction of the closure. * No mooring is permitted between Locks 8 and 16. Boaters are advised to plan their passage carefully and allow sufficient time to clear the flight before the closure resumes. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Despite our efforts to conserve water and maintain navigation, continued dry weather and falling reservoir levels mean we can no longer maintain passage through this section. From Sunday 9 August, Locks 8, 14, 15 and 16 will be closed to navigation. Last entry into the flight will be at 2pm, with all locks closed by 3pm. These closures are necessary to protect limited water resources, support navigation recovery and safeguard canal infrastructure and ecology. Subject to conditions remaining suitable, we intend to provide a limited movement window on Monday 10 August between 10am and 3pm, with the last entry at 1pm. We are closely monitoring the situation and doing everything possible to maximise available water supplies across this part of the network. Since our last update the fallen tree has now been removed, and our contractors are carrying out excavation works to gain access to the culvert. This will enable the team to undertake detailed inspections and surveys, providing the information required for our design engineers to develop a repair plan. This is expected to be completed over the next couple of weeks.
At this stage, the outcome of the surveys and inspections will determine the repair approach, so it is not yet possible to confirm exact timescales. We expect to have a clearer understanding of the work required over the next couple of weeks and will provide a further update once the design process has begun.
Water levels remain stable, and normal flows are being maintained.
Our Customer Support team remains in contact with those most directly affected and will continue to provide advice and assistance wherever possible.

From our last update, further detailed surveys and assessments of the damaged canal embankment, towpath and culvert are continuing. Some of these surveys and investigations cannot be completed until the fallen tree at the site has been removed, and this is planned to be removed next week and is expected to take several days to complete.
The results of these surveys will enable our engineers to determine the safest and most effective long-term repair method, while helping us restore navigation as quickly as possible.
Our teams have been working during the recent heavy rainfall, ensuring the dam remains secure and water levels continue to be stable. Normal water flows are being maintained, and Hurleston Reservoir and is operating as usual. However, navigation remains closed as it remains unsafe to pass due to significant silting and the dam structure in the canal.
Until the survey findings have been fully analysed and a method of repair has been agreed, we are unable to confirm definitive timescales for the works. As previously advised, we expect the permanent repairs to take months rather than weeks to complete. We hope to be able to provide a more detailed timeframe in the next few weeks.
The sections of canal that remain open and unaffected by the closure are from Llangollen Basin to Bridge 31A (Whitchurch By-Pass Bridge), and from Grindley Brook locks, onwards to Swanley.
We recognise the disruption this closure is causing and would like to thank customers for their continued patience and understanding while we work towards a safe and lasting repair.

These measures are being introduced to help conserve water while water resources remain under pressure. By limiting lock operations, we can better manage the available water supply and reduce the likelihood of further restrictions being required. However, if conditions do not improve, it may become necessary to re-introduce additional measures, including the temporary closure of the lock flight.
We are continuing to monitor conditions closely and will update this notice as the situation develops.

While water levels on the Coventry Canal around Atherstone may appear plentiful, the challenge is not simply the amount of water in the canal itself but having enough water available to operate the locks safely and sustainably.
The lock flight at Atherstone requires around 20 megalitres of water each day to operate. The main water supplies for the Coventry and Ashby canals come from the River Swift near Rugby and the Griff Feeder in Nuneaton. At present, neither source is providing the volume of water needed to support the reopening of the locks.
Our teams monitor water levels and river flows daily. Once the water supply from these sources is consistently high enough to support lock operations, the restrictions will be lifted, and the locks will reopen to boating.
We appreciate that, to many boaters, the canal may look as though it has plenty of water. However, managing a canal network relies on a reliable and sustainable supply to replace the water used each time a lock operates.
We would like to thank boaters for their patience and understanding while we continue to monitor conditions and work towards reopening the navigation as soon as possible.

Will be providing an assisted passage on the River Stort on Wednesday 7th October between 9:00am and 3:00pm and Wednesday 14th October between 9am and 3pm.
To help support boaters and carefully manage the current low water levels, our team and our volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to assist boats navigating through the locks.
The assisted passage will provide access through the full closure, covering the following locks:

* Brick Lock 14
* Roydon Lock 13
* Hunsdon Mill Lock 12
* Parndon Mill Lock 11
* Burnt Mill Lock 10
* Latton Lock 9
* Harlow Mill Lock 8
Please note no booking is required.
Customers wishing to use the assisted passage should arrive at their chosen lock between 9:00am and 3:00pm and follow the instructions of our team on site.

Recent rainfall has not improved conditions enough to allow the Northampton Arm to fully reopen. However, having reviewed the current situation, we believe that a limited period of navigation can be accommodated without having a significant impact on water resources elsewhere on the Grand Union Canal.
To support boaters and boating businesses, the Northampton Arm will therefore temporarily reopen from 9am on Tuesday 22 September until 3pm on Wednesday 23 September, with the last boats entering Locks 1 and 12 no later than 2pm.
This temporary opening is intended to provide an opportunity for essential boat movements while conditions remain under close review. At the end of this period the Northampton Arm will need to close again.
We will monitor the impact of this opening and continue to assess water availability. While we cannot yet confirm whether further navigation windows will be possible during October, we hope that additional opportunities may be available if conditions allow.

Reservoir holdings feeding the Northampton Arm are lower than normal for the time of year. This is a result of the prolonged dry weather, water loss through evaporation during the heat wave, and, in some instances, paddles being left open or leaks in the infrastructure.
To help us conserve water and maintain safe navigation, we will be closing the Northampton Arm to passage from 3pm on Monday 27th July. Lock 1 and 12 will be locked.

The River Skell, which supplies water to the Ripon Canal, has fallen to critical levels following a prolonged period of low rainfall within the catchment area.
To conserve water and protect the canal network, Rhodesfield Lock and Bellfurrows Lock have been closed to navigation. As a result, the Ripon Canal is closed to through navigation.
This action has been taken to:

* Protect wildlife habitats along the canal.
* Safeguard moored craft affected by low water levels.

These investigations are essential to help inform the most appropriate repair solution and ensure the long-term integrity of the structure.

We are seeking to provide assisted passage for vessels returning to their home moorings at Ripon Motor Boat Club and AQUAVISTA Marina.
There will also be an opportunity for craft wishing to leave the Ripon Canal and not return to transit Oxclose Lock on:

Following a recent drop in water levels on the Montgomery Canal, we are taking action to restore levels to normal as quickly as possible. To safeguard water resources , all lock use between Byles Lock and Bank Lock is suspended until further notice.
New fish screens have recently been installed at the Penarth feeder to comply with Natural Resources Wales regulations. While the works temporarily affected water levels, a combination of dry weather and low river levels before installation also contributed to the current situation.
We are clearing the new screens daily and have temporarily closed locks on the canal. An unauthorised water transfer through locks upstream of Welshpool unfortunately significantly reduced water levels further, increasing the risk of damage to the canal. The locks will remain closed while levels recover.
As part of the fish screen works, a recent dredging programme has improved water abstraction at the feeder, which will help support water levels in the canal over the longer term. Subject to weather conditions and any ongoing drought impacts, we expect water levels to return to normal within the next two weeks.
We apologise for the temporary impact on navigation, but these measures are necessary to protect the canal while recovery takes place. We will continue to provide updates and look forward to reopening the locks. | 05 Oct 26 00:30:57 |

Works taking place at Slaithwaite Reservoir have necessitated a drawdown of reservoir levels that has been ongoing for several months. With recent warm, dry weather and an increase in boat movement on the canal, we have insufficient water resources to maintain navigation for the long term on the lower section of the canal.
From Monday 15th June 2026 navigation between Lock 1E and Lock 31E will close with these locks being padlocked closed.
Whilst the closure is in effect passage will only be possible between Standedge Tunnel and Lock 31E. Anyone looking to transit through Standedge Tunnel from Diggle in the Northwest will only be permitted to do so with a return tunnel booking. Boats will be able to turn in the winding hole above Lock 31E.

Investigation works have now been completed, and our contract partner, JN Bentley, is making good progress with the repair works. The adjacent culvert has been repaired, and backfilling of the excavation is currently underway. Repairs to the canal bed and the sunken towpath will follow. To facilitate the canal bed repair, the flume supplying water downstream will need to be repositioned. Pumps will be on hand throughout this operation to help maintain water levels. Reconstruction works on the canal embankment have now recommenced.
Following further assessment of ground conditions, areas of soft material within the existing embankment are being removed and replaced with compacted granular fill. In addition, the embankment design has been enhanced through the introduction of a Mechanically Stabilised Layer within the lower section of the new embankment, providing additional strength and resilience.
The canal dams recently relocated to the southern end of the embankment will remain in place for the duration of the works.

We understand how much the Anderton Boat Lift means to boaters, visitors and the community. We're focussed on finding a solution to get the lift operational again while we look to secure the larger investment for its long-term future. We are still aiming to reopen one caisson in May 2027, as planned.
Since the closure of the lift, the Trust has carried out extensive work to identify the best way to repair and modify the caisson gate lifting mechanisms to prevent similar failures happening again. Several options were considered and in Autumn 2025, after the investigation into the cause of failure had been completed, the detailed engineering design began. The design considered a solution that would remove the need for cables and provide a robust and reliable lifting mechanism. However, as the designs have progressed, the complexity of doing this on such a historic structure has led to the scope, and the forecast cost, increasing significantly – to the point where that option is currently neither practical nor affordable. Consequently, we have needed to consider an alternative solution, based more closely on the existing cable system, to get the lift open and operational for boaters and all those who visit. The solution needs to be safe, legally compliant and in keeping with the historic status of the structure.
We believe we have now found a proposal which requires testing. The next step is for specialist engineers who are familiar with these lifting systems to design and replace the components required before undertaking a series of tests to prove that the solution is safe and viable. The process will also confirm what other works are necessary prior to the lift re-opening for boat use.
Customers and visitors will be able to see this activity being undertaken at the lift this Autumn as we replace elements of the lifting systems and begin testing procedures. We expect to know by December 2026 what further work is required in the new year to reopen the lift by May 2027. We will keep everyone updated through this process as to whether the tests are successful and confirm the forecast opening date.
The Trust will hold an open day at Anderton in the Autumn. We'll publish the date once we have the testing programme and at the most helpful point to share progress. The Trust is aware of how frustrating the closure of the lift has been to boaters and that reopening the lift has seemed to be straightforward to many outside of the project team. The open day will provide an opportunity to share more about the options that have been explored and the constraints we have had to work within to get the lift open. It will also be an opportunity to hear about how we approach a secure future for the boat lift in the longer term. Our priority remains to get the lift operating again for boats. We're sorry for the time it has taken to get to this point – and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience and support while we work towards a solution and the reopening of the lift.

Earlier this year, the Anderton Boat Lift was closed after a lifting wire failure during planned routine maintenance by our teams. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reopen the lift using the existing gate lifting system. Trust engineers have been working closely with specialist consultants to develop a solution that will see the original rope-and-pulley mechanism replaced on all gates with a more modern, robust and safer lifting system making the lift more reliable.
We're pleased to confirm that the Trust has prioritised the funding required to support the detailed engineering design. However, this work will take time, and the lift will remain closed throughout all next year 2026. We understand how frustrating this closure will be for boaters who regularly use this vital link between the Weaver Navigation and the rest of the Trust's network. The significant investment we're making into this repair reflects how important the lift is to our waterways. Although the lift itself will stay closed, the Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre will remain open, with an exciting programme of events and activities planned for 2026. We hope you'll continue to visit and enjoy everything the site has to offer.
This essential redesign work is being delivered ahead of, and separately from, the wider refurbishment programme. We'll continue to share updates as the project progresses.

This section is managed by the Bridgewater Canal Company, not the Canal & River Trust. However, as this canal connects to our network and forms part of the Cheshire Cruising Ring, we are liaising closely with them.
