We're focussed on finding a solution to get the lift operational again while we look to secure the larger investment for its long-term future. We are still aiming to reopen one caisson in May 2027, as planned.
Since the closure of the lift, the Trust has carried out extensive work to identify the best way to repair and modify the caisson gate lifting mechanisms to prevent similar failures happening again. Several options were considered and in Autumn 2025, after the investigation into the cause of failure had been completed, the detailed engineering design began. The design considered a solution that would remove the need for cables and provide a robust and reliable lifting mechanism. However, as the designs have progressed, the complexity of doing this on such a historic structure has led to the scope, and the forecast cost, increasing significantly – to the point where that option is currently neither practical nor affordable. Consequently, we have needed to consider an alternative solution, based more closely on the existing cable system, to get the lift open and operational for boaters and all those who visit. The solution needs to be safe, legally compliant and in keeping with the historic status of the structure.
We believe we have now found a proposal which requires testing. The next step is for specialist engineers who are familiar with these lifting systems to design and replace the components required before undertaking a series of tests to prove that the solution is safe and viable. The process will also confirm what other works are necessary prior to the lift re-opening for boat use.
Customers and visitors will be able to see this activity being undertaken at the lift this Autumn as we replace elements of the lifting systems and begin testing procedures. We expect to know by December 2026 what further work is required in the new year to reopen the lift by May 2027. We will keep everyone updated through this process as to whether the tests are successful and confirm the forecast opening date.
The Trust will hold an open day at Anderton in the Autumn. We'll publish the date once we have the testing programme and at the most helpful point to share progress. The Trust is aware of how frustrating the closure of the lift has been to boaters and that reopening the lift has seemed to be straightforward to many outside of the project team. The open day will provide an opportunity to share more about the options that have been explored and the constraints we have had to work within to get the lift open. It will also be an opportunity to hear about how we approach a secure future for the boat lift in the longer term. Our priority remains to get the lift operating again for boats. We're sorry for the time it has taken to get to this point – and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience and support while we work towards a solution and the reopening of the lift.

The embankment reconstruction is due to commence this week. The embankment is to be 115-metres long x 5.8-metre high, with 45-degree steep side slopes. It will be constructed using approximately 14,000 tonnes of compacted granular aggregate with geogrid reinforcement at approximately 0.6-metre vertical spacing over its width.
A draft design of the concrete canal channel has been completed and is now being finalised for construction purposes. This will be 9.5-metres wide x 1.6-metres deep. Construction of this channel will commence once the embankment is complete.
Water is continuing to be pumped around the breach with additional pumps being provided to provide resilience and extra pumping capacity.

Boats will be able to turn in the winding hole above Lock 31E.

The River Skell, which supplies water to the Ripon Canal, has fallen to critical levels following a prolonged period of low rainfall within the catchment area.
To conserve water and protect the canal network, Rhodesfield Lock and Bellfurrows Lock have been closed to navigation. As a result, the Ripon Canal is closed to through navigation.
This action has been taken to:
* Reduce water loss through lock operations.
* Protect wildlife habitats along the canal.
* Safeguard moored craft affected by low water levels.

The situation is under continuous review. An update will be provided once water levels in the River Skell recover sufficiently to allow navigation to resume safely

The Trust has very limited control over access to this area and has not been able to prevent this closure.
During this time, access to Albert Dock and Salthouse Dock will only be possible via Brunswick Lock, which can be booked directly through Liverpool Marina. This route requires a crossing from Ellesmere Port via the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey.
We understand this may affect your plans, and we're working closely with Peel to keep disruption to a minimum. If you already have a booking during the closure period, our team will have been in contact to talk through any changes and help make alternative arrangements where needed. Outside of these dates, Liverpool Link passages and moorings into Salthouse Dock will continue as normal.

To proactively conserve available water resources and help maintain navigation on the remainder of the canal, Cottingwith Lock (Lock 9) and Gardam Lock (Lock 8) will be closed to navigation for the duration of this restriction.

The operative will temporarily stop traffic crossing the bridge to allow vessels to pass safely beneath the structure.
The signed towpath diversion remains in place and will continue to be in operation until all necessary repairs have been completed.

The findings are currently being reviewed with technical specialists and will help form the design of the permanent repair and determine the scope of the construction works required. The team will also need to carry out further investigations before the repair works begin.
The team will continue to monitor the site and progress with their investigations to support the development of a permanent repair solution.
The canal water levels remain stable, with normal water flows maintained, and Hurleston Reservoir continues to operate as normal.
While it is still too early to confirm a timescale for the repair works, due to the scale and complexity of the damage means we expect the permanent repair works to take months to complete once repairs begin. We will provide further details on the anticipated timeline as our investigations and design work progresses.
The sections of the canal that remain open and unaffected by the closure are from Llangollen Basin to Bridge 31A (Whitchurch By-Pass Bridge), and from there onwards to Swanley.
We understand the disruption this closure is causing and are continuing to work towards a safe and lasting repair. Our Customer Support team remains in contact with those most directly affected and will continue to provide advice and support where possible.

The aim of this closure is to reduce water demand and allow water levels to recover during the current dry spell.
To accommodate craft travelling through Lock 17, we will temporarily open the flight on Thursday 13 August:
* Lock 16 will be open from 08:00 until 11:00 for boats entering the flight.
* Boats entering at Lock 16 will be permitted to continue through and exit at Lock 8 by 13:00.
* All craft must be clear of the affected section prior to the reintroduction of the closure.
* No mooring is permitted between Locks 8 and 16.
Boaters are advised to plan their passage carefully and allow sufficient time to clear the flight before the closure resumes.

These essential repairs are necessary to avoid significant water loss through the lock and to ensure the continued safe operation of the flight.

There will be review points throughout the works if conditions change and they canal is to re-open. this currently looks like the following
• Works at Lock 33 are expected to commence during the week commencing 17th August.
• Replacement of the top gates is expected to be completed during the week commencing 31st August.
• At that point, the project team will review progress on site, alongside prevailing water levels, weather conditions and any rainfall received across the catchment, to determine whether any navigation passage opportunity can be safely provided.
• Following repositioning of the crane boat, works will begin on the bottom gates, with completion currently anticipated by 25 September.
• This will be followed by approximately four days of demobilisation and making the site safe.
• Subject to conditions and successful completion of the works, a planned navigation passage window is currently expected between 2 and 4 October.
As with all works taking place during the current drought conditions, the programme will be kept under constant review. We are holding regular internal meetings to monitor progress, water resource conditions and navigation impacts, and we will continue to assess opportunities to minimise disruption wherever possible.
We wanted to provide this update as early as possible given the interest many of you have shown in the planned works and the feedback you previously shared.
Your comments played an important role in helping us understand the potential business impacts of a future planned closure, and we are grateful for the constructive engagement we have received throughout.

The Bingley Five Rise and Three Rise lock flights are now open, as of Monday 24 August.
The flights will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at the following times:
Morning
* Down: 08:00–10:00 — last entry at 09:00
* Up: 10:00–12:00 — last entry at 11:00
Afternoon
* Down: 13:00–15:00 — last entry at 14:00
* Up: 15:00–17:00 — last entry at 16:00
Boaters are advised to plan their passage accordingly and ensure they arrive in sufficient time for the last entry.
Newlay, Forge & Kirkstall Locks
The locks will be available for passage on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, operating to the normal summer operating times at between 08:00 and 16:00

The lock cannot currently be operated safely because the chamber is not equalising correctly. This creates excessive pressure on the gates and balance beams during operation, and as a result the lock remains chained off and closed to navigation.
A full lock dewatering operation is now required so that colleagues can carry out further investigations and identify the underlying cause of the problem.
Due to the lock's location and its proximity to the River Soar, the site set-up needed to undertake this work safely is particularly complex. The current review date shown on this notice reflects our best estimate of when the lock may be able to reopen based on the information available today.
