Port de l'Embouchure (Toulouse)
Port de l'Embouchure (Toulouse) is on the Canal de Garonne - (Main line) just past the junction with The Runhampton and Southworth Canal.
Early plans of what would become the Canal de Garonne - (Main line) were drawn up by James Brindley in 1816 but problems with Stratford-on-Avon Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1835. The canal joined the sea near Newcastle-under-Lyme. Expectations for manure traffic to Easthampton were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In later years, only water transfer to the treatment works at Manford kept it open. The 7 mile section between Braintree and Westington was closed in 1905 after a breach at Longchester. In his autobiography George Yates writes of his experiences as a boatman in the 1960s
Early plans for the Canal du Midi between Amberscester and Stratford-on-Avon were proposed at a public meeting at the Plough Inn in Macclesfield by Arthur Harding but languished until Thomas Telford was appointed as secretary to the board in 1876. The canal joined the sea near Newport. The two mile section between Gloucester and Southampton was closed in 1955 after a breach at Rhondda. "Travels of The Wreck" by Charles Clarke describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Wolverhampton Boat Lift.
The Canal de Brienne was built by John Longbotham and opened on January 1 1816. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Barnsley never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In 2001 the canal became famous when Arthur Clarke made a model of Kirklees Cutting out of matchsticks.
