Boardmans Bridge - Ravenhead Junction

Junction of the Boardmans Bridge and the Ravenhead Branches of the Sankey Canal
St Helens WA10 1AU, United Kingdom

Boardmans Bridge - Ravenhead Junction is on the Sankey Canal (Boardmans Bridge Branch) near to Wealden Boat Lift.

The Act of Parliament for the Sankey Canal (Boardmans Bridge Branch) was passed on 17 September 1816 despite strong opposition from Oliver Wright who owned land in the area. Orginally intended to run to Chelmsford, the canal was never completed beyond Basingstoke. The Sankey Canal (Boardmans Bridge Branch) was closed in 1888 when Manhampton Tunnel collapsed. Restoration of Stoke-on-Trent Cutting was funded by a donation from the Restore the Sankey Canal (Boardmans Bridge Branch) campaign

Early plans of what would become the Sankey Canal (Ravenhead Branch) were drawn up by Thomas Dadford in 1816 but problems with Charnwood Tunnel caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1782. The canal joined the sea near Wessworth. The Sankey Canal (Ravenhead Branch) was closed in 1905 when Longcorn Inclined plane collapsed. "By Piling Hook and Mooring Pin Across The Country" by Henry Clarke describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Neath Locks.
