Westgate Bridge (north) carries the M6 motorway over the River Severn (main river - Worcester to Gloucester).
Early plans of what would become the River Severn (main river - Worcester to Gloucester) were drawn up by George Parker in 1888 but problems with Ashfield Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1782. Expectations for coal traffic to Teignbridge were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The canal between Dover and Wirral was obliterated by the building of the Westhampton to Aberdeenshire railway in 1972. Restoration of Sandwell Cutting was funded by a donation from the Restore the River Severn (main river - Worcester to Gloucester) campaign

There is a bridge here which takes a dual carriageway over the canal.

![Trio of Westgate Bridges – Gloucester, Gloucestershire. Drainage work being carried out beneath the trio of the Westgate Bridges over the River Severn, here in Gloucester. The two outer bridges carry the A417 road into and out of Gloucester while the central bridge is a pedestrian bridge. I lived in this immediate area for 17 years, where I spent the happiest days of my life. Alney Island is a flood zone and when a house came up for sale here I was tempted, but no. To the north lie the Showmans Winter Quarters. My best guess for this is 2000. ![Westend Parade - Gloucester, Gloucestershire. Here on the right bank of the River Severn, on the other side of the river from the city of Gloucester, is this enclave of houses and the Showman's Winter Quarters. Some 19th century homes here and others more modern in these three streets – Alney Terrace, Westend Parade and Westend Terrace. Some of my happiest years were spent here, living in Westend Terrace, from 1985 – 2004 and I was tempted to make a return here when a house came up for sale in Westend Parade but the area has been and possibly still is at high risk of flooding. Passing on the north-east side is the Nottingham – Cardiff railway line and immediately fronting on the south is the A417 Ledbury – Gloucester road which replaced the former main route into Gloucester via Telford's Over Bridge.
