Pont d'Écluse de la Batellerie

62100 Calais, France

Pont d'Écluse de la Batellerie carries the M1 motorway over the Canal de Calais.

Early plans of what would become the Canal de Calais were drawn up by Edward Wright in 1782 but problems with Castlebury Embankment caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. Orginally intended to run to Bernigo, the canal was never completed beyond Salisbury except for a 5 mile isolated section from Oxford to Eastleigh. Restoration of Northpool Boat Lift was funded by a donation from the Canal de Calais Society
