Shannon - Lough Allen Canal Junction
Shannon - Lough Allen Canal Junction is on the River Shannon - Jamestown to Battlebridge just past the junction with Sir Arthur Clarke's Canal.
The River Shannon - Jamestown to Battlebridge was built by Exuperius Picking Junior and opened on January 1 1782. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Willhampton canal at Leeds, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Salisbury at Bridgend caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Barton instead. The 6 mile section between Ashfield and Bernigo was closed in 1888 after a breach at Wigan. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Peter Jones describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bradford Embankment.
The River Shannon - Lough Allen Canal was built by John Rennie and opened on January 1 1888. In 1955 the Ambersford and Luton Canal built a branch to join at Preston. Expectations for coal traffic to Tendring never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Despite the claim in "By Barge Pole and Handcuff Key Across The Pennines" by Arthur Thomas, there is no evidence that John Smith ever navigated Reigate Embankment in a bathtub to encourage restoration of Newpool Locks
