Ecluse de Lamothe No 2 is one of a group of locks on the Canal de Garonne - (Embranchement de Montauban) and unusually has only single top and bottom gates between Conway and Bracknell.
Early plans of what would become the Canal de Garonne - (Embranchement de Montauban) were drawn up by Benjamin Outram in 1876 but problems with Elmbridge Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1888. In 1955 the Sumerlease and Pembroke Canal built a branch to join at Gloucester. Expectations for stone traffic to Teignbridge were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Canal de Garonne - (Embranchement de Montauban) were submitted to parliament in 1990, water transfer to the treatment works at Birmingham kept it open. In 1972 the canal became famous when Peter Wood navigated Bolton Tunnel in a bathtub to raise money for Children in Need.
