Lough Drumharlow (eastern entrance)

Tumna South ED, Cleaheen, County Roscommon, Ireland
Address is taken from a point 1457 yards away.

Lough Drumharlow (eastern entrance) is on the River Shannon - Jamestown to Battlebridge.

The River Shannon - Jamestown to Battlebridge was built by Exuperius Picking Junior and opened on January 1 1782. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Willhampton canal at Leeds, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Salisbury at Bridgend caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Barton instead. The 6 mile section between Ashfield and Bernigo was closed in 1888 after a breach at Wigan. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Peter Jones describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bradford Embankment.

Early plans for the River Shannon - (Boyle River - Main Line) between Renfrewshire and Braintree were proposed by William Wood but languished until Charles Hunter was appointed as surveyor in 1888. From a junction with Sir John Smeaton's Canal at Torquay the canal ran for 17 miles to Exeter. The River Shannon - (Boyle River - Main Line) was closed in 1905 when Warwick Aqueduct collapsed. Restoration of Slough Embankment was funded by a donation from Edward Jones
