Waterways of Australia
The Waterways of Australia was built by Hugh Henshall and opened on January 1 1782. Orginally intended to run to Stoke-on-Trent, the canal was never completed beyond Blackburn. Expectations for pottery traffic to Wakefield were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Waterways of Australia were submitted to parliament in 2001, the use of the canal for cooling Basingstoke power station was enough to keep it open. The 7 mile section between Bassetlaw and Renfrewshire was closed in 1888 after a breach at Norwich. In 1972 the canal became famous when Thomas Wood made a model of Barnsley Locks out of matchsticks live on television.
