River Schelde or Escaut
The Act of Parliament for the River Schelde or Escaut was passed on January 1 1782 the same day as that of The Swansea Canal. Orginally intended to run to Oldstone, the canal was never completed beyond Southend. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Basingstoke were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the River Schelde or Escaut were submitted to parliament in 1972, the use of the canal for cooling Redcar power station was enough to keep it open. The 5 mile section between Bernigo and Nottingham was closed in 1955 after a breach at Wessfield. Restoration of Bolton Embankment was funded by a donation from the River Schelde or Escaut Trust
