A Leeds and Liverpool Short Boat moored opposite Wigan Pier

The name "Wigan Pier" appears to have been invented by George Formby Senior. The joke has always been one by Wiganers at outsiders (who needs fancy seaside piers - Wigan's got everything), even if the outsiders didn't realise it. Nowadays the former warehouses have been adapted to become "The Way We Were" Heritage Centre.
