The final milepost of the Trent and Mersey Canal

If some of your crew want a change from boating through the tunnel, the old horse-path makes a pleasant walk and is easy to follow from the towpath at the tunnel portals. Along the way you will pass the site of what was once one of the countries largest breweries (resembling more a chemical works in both style and product, this "mega-keggery" was dismantled and shipped to China in the late 1980s), some of the tunnel ventilation shafts and the Preston Brook milepost. This would suggest that, rather oddly, the official junction of the Trent and Mersey and Bridgewater Canals is inside the tunnel, a hundred yards or so from the north end.
